The 2010 International Program for Development Evaluation Training

Date: June 7, 2010 to July 2, 2010
Venue: Ottawa, Canada

“Information on the 2010 International Program for Development Evaluation Training is now available at www.ipdet.org and on-line registration is open.

This year marks IPDET’s tenth-year anniversary and we are very excited by the way this year’s program is taking shape. Once again this year, the Core program will offer eighty hours of instruction and learning in the fundamentals of development evaluation. Participants will also have more than 25 workshops to choose from in the two weeks that follow the Core, including several dynamic new workshops that will be of interest to you and your organization:

  • Building Evaluation within Ministries: Lessons Learned and Best Practices in Industrialized and Developing Countries— taught by Frederic Martin, co-president of the Institute for Development in Economics and Administration
  • Assessing Program Impacts When a Statistical Evaluation Design Is Not Possibletaught by Michael Bamberger, consultant and author; and Frans Leeuw, professor,  University of Maastricht and director, National Justice Research Center at the Hague
  • Evaluating Humanitarian Assistance, taught by John Cosgrave and Margie Buchanan-Smith, both experienced consultants and evaluators of international humanitarian aid
  • Improving Performance Assessment, Evaluation, and Learning in Foundations and Not-for-Profit Grant-Making Organizations, taught by Nancy McPherson, director of evaluation, Rockefeller Foundation and Phil Buchanan,  president of the Center for Effective Philanthropy
  • Governance, Corruption and Development Evaluation: Role of Indicators and Empirical Tools by Dani Kaufman, Senior Fellow, Global Economy and Development program, Brookings Institution

Applicants can attend from one to four weeks. Participants have told us that they want the workshops to be longer and more in-depth, so this year we have increased the duration of many of the workshops. In addition to intensive learning in large and small groups, the program will be packed with special guest speakers, networking events, simulations with guest evaluation specialists, participant roundtables, poster board sessions and more.

Visit the website for more information about the program and our outstanding group of world-class instructors drawn from four different continents. Stay tuned as we will be posting more information about IPDET’s 10th year anniversary events as it becomes available.

Applicants: Note that you must register on the IPDET website www.ipdet.org before you can log in and access the on-line application form. If you experience difficulties with the application process, contact Mary Dixon, the IPDET Registrar, at mary_dixon@carleton.ca.

  1. I have been interested in attending ipdet training since 2008. I applied for a scholarship then and did not get it. I will give it another try this year and hope for the best. My country, South Africa is facing a huge challenge regarding M&E and it is critical that capacity building is continued in the M&E arena.

  2. I am interested in taking this course , coming from a developing country like Fiji and after spending 4 years in the Ministry of health and have been involved in NonCommunicable Disease ( the main cause of mortality and morbidity in Fiji ) and been the Reproductive Health Project officer for the past year .This is one of the main gaps in the programs and I would like to be exposed to this type of training as this country does not have any expert in this area

  3. I am very much interested to take the Evaluation training. I have a B.A in English Literature from Cairo University (1983) and MBA from City University in 2000. I have worked for 27 years at international organizations mainly on project management and administration. I am currently and for the last five years based at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) in Cairo and I am in charge of a project with UNDP for Empowering and Connecting the Community through ICT which applies the Results-based Management for evaluating the impact of the project. I got M&E courses at UNDP here in Cairo which gave me just some basics. I am looking for professional training and more experience in this area. I very much appreciate receiving a scholarship, if possible. Thanks.

  4. M&E is crucial for my work; I am the coordinator for the CSOs advisory consortium. All what we do is developing the capacities of the civil society organizations in Sudan, then we measure the outcomes of our intervention at the community level
The main challenge we faced here is doing appropriate assessment at the beginning of the intervention and evaluation of the outcomes at the end. The development indicators are hard to measure since we have a somewhat not a very stable social and political environment
I applied for the program and hopping that I will get the chance to participate, I couldn’t catch the possible time for receiving a scholarship but I will mobilize my own resources to be able attend it
