1. Current Aims
The move to this 2008 version of the MandE NEWS website was driven by three ambitions:
1. To simplify the administration of the website, while the content grows and grows. WordPress provides an excellent means for doing this, while retaining a great degree of flexibility over design and functioning of the website. WordPress is Open Source software, supported by a wide community of users and developers.
2. To expand the opportunities for visitors to engage with the website contents and each other. This website now runs like an expanded blog, with comment facilities underneath all postings. And the old interactive features (Open Forum, Email lists, Visitors Links, Online Opinion Surveys) have been retained.
3. To increase the amount of user generated content. Already a large number of the news items come from postings on M&E email lists, especially the MandE NEWS email list, which I moderate.
If you are interested in more specific details about the development agenda for this website, then go to that post, and feel free to add your comments and suggestions.
2. Supporters
Abigail Kaplan Ramage, based in Cambridge, is currently helping with the development of a bibliography page on the M&E of health and nutrition programs, at
Ros MacDonald, of IMA International, has been producing monthly summaries of the postings on the MandE NEWS email list, including links that were mentioned in the postings. This work is now being continued by Nicky David, also of IMA International.
James, at FreshlyPressed.net, is providing ongoing help with technical challenges associated with the use of WordPress. FreshlyPressed are now hosting the MandE NEWS website.
SOS Children’s Villages (UK), based in Cambridge, are now paying the annual website hosting costs.
3. Funding
MandE NEWS was funded from 1997 to 2005 by: Oxfam (GB) , Save the Children Fund (UK) , ActionAid (UK) , Christian Aid , CAFOD (UK), CIIR (UK), IDRC (Canada), Water Aid (UK), World Vision (UK), WWF (UK) and Exchange via BOND.
Since 2006 I have covered the costs of managing the website from my own pocket. The main costs have been:
- web hosting by demon.net in the UK, up to May 2008 (Now hosted by FreshlyPressed.net, and paid for by SOS Children’s Villages (UK) )
- broadband internet connection (less than 10% of access time)
- time spent updating the contents of the website and moderating the associated email lists.
